Some people think I'm talking about operating a business when I discuss the house-design process. There's a reason behind that. The business procedures are comparable to those for upgrading a home. As much as some individuals detest the thought of turning their homes into businesses, we spend more time there than elsewhere.

The maximum amount you should spend on any improvement was the sum of that figure and the cost per square foot of your home when you purchased it. Any work anywhere on your property falls under that. You should be five to eight percent below that figure to give yourself leeway for a market decline or to earn a profit.

Once you know your maximum spending limit, I want the whole family to get together and write down their wishes for the house design process. What matters most to each member of the family? Open communication is the key to making changes inside your own four walls. Mom and Dad can't be the only ones influencing things.

Where does your family spend most of its time? Where can we find a place where everyone can relax? People frequently answer "the kitchen." Alternatively, they could invest the funds in a huge family room with a theater setup. Your family is everything. Depending on your particular circumstances, there is only one appropriate response.
